  • Beginning Checkmate Chess (Gr. K-5)

    Progress With Chess is excited to offer two class levels to cater to students' interests and needs, ranging from Beginner to Intermediate! Students in the Beginner section will be able to complete a legal game of chess by the end of the session. Students will learn how the pieces move, all of the various rules and caveats of chess, as well as basic checkmating patterns and endgames. Please be advised, Progress with Chess may move your child to intermediate if in the child's best interest. Each session will now include a giveaway at the end of the session to further your child’s playing ability! No class October 10 and November 28. Students attending Moreland Hills Elementary school must update their SDM notes to attend the program. Students without an updated note will not be able to ride the Rec Bus.   • Future Scientists (Gr. K-2)

    Future Scientists is where children question, challenge, and examine their world with excitement and hands-on activities! Each class students experiment, analyze, predict…, and make a project emphasizing the topic. Taught by Future Scientists trained and certified teachers. In session 1 students will learn the relationship between Grabbing Gravity & Igniting Inertia, experiment with indicator paper and how everyday materials mix together in Creative Chemistry, test different types of tapes and glues in Adhesion & Cohesion, learn about the levels of soil and the animals that live in it, in Delving into Dirt, and explore how science affects The Wonders of Age. In session 2 students will examine the importance of separating and classifying various objects in Silly Separating Science, explore how Germy Germs & Biting Bacteria are invisible, understand how water turns into solid, ice and gas in Water Works, explore the power of our brains in Sensational Senses, experiment with floating and sinking in Beautiful Buoyancy, and learn the role of science in The Magic of Balls! No class September 23, September 25, October 2, November 4, November 25, and November 27. Students attending Moreland Hills Elementary school must update their SDM notes to attend the program.     Wanna make video games? Love building with LEGO® bricks? This camp is for you. Learn how to create video games using Scratch, free software from MIT that you can use at home long after the class. Then, we'll bring the action to life as we build and program LEGO® WeDo® robots. Bring a flash drive to save your game! No class October 2 and November 27.   • Home Alone Basics (Gr. 4-5)

    Taking those first steps towards independence? Our "My First Time Home Alone" course is designed specifically for 4th and 5th graders to equip them with the fundamental knowledge and practical strategies for staying safe and comfortable when parents are away. Through engaging activities and discussions, we'll learn about important topics like emergency procedures, knowing safe boundaries, basic home safety, and how to handle unexpected situations, all while building confidence and peace of mind.   • Intermediate Checkmate Chess (Gr. K-5)

Students will learn more complex checkmating sequences and endgames, and will be introduced to tactics, opening principles, and basic positional strategy. Each session will now include a giveaway at the end of the session to further your child’s playing ability! In this exciting class, young builders will channel their inner Steve or Alex, designing and constructing epic structures, iconic characters, and imaginative landscapes inspired by their favorite game. From creeper-proof shelters to sprawling villages and intricate redstone contraptions, participants will unleash their creativity, problem-solve with hands-on building challenges, and collaborate with fellow Minecrafters. Get ready to transform pixels into plastic and build the ultimate LEGO Minecraft universe! No class November 24.
